What is it about Cannondales?
August 19, 2009 | 3 Comments
Back when I was still a career book-reader and didn’t know anything about bikes, other career book-readers around me used to speak of Cannondales with reverential tones. “They’re so light!” and “The tubes are so big!” Made no difference to me, I was still trying to figure out what “hegemonic” meant.
So I found it ironic [...]

Cyclists are the last group it’s still okay to discriminate against
August 14, 2009 | Leave a Comment
You can’t tell a cyclist just by looking (well, sometimes you can). When we’re off the bike, we’re not marked by color, height, shape, outfit, or any of the other usual markers of a subgroup of humanity. And yet, it’s still okay to hate cyclists. Publically. Openly.
The Boston Globe printed an editorial this week [...]

Other cyclists: Things that will make me not respect you
August 7, 2009 | 8 Comments
I was thinking today (while riding my bike of course, a wonderful time to think) about all the things that people do on the bike which I am able to recognize from afar that make me have no respect whatsoever for their skills on the bike. I might like some help with this from readers [...]

Thanks, Pan Mass Challenge guy, for spitting on me

I guess the fact that he couldn’t drop a tiny little girl while riding his custom titanium Merlin (while wearing running shorts) must have been frustrating.

Short Takes April 24
April 24, 2009 | Leave a Comment
I went on a “longer” ride today. The quotes come because I inexplicably rode my bike very little this winter, so what was once my regular, medium length ride has become a bit longer and rarer than usual. It’s unforgivable, being this slow and out of shape in glorious April, when the trees are budding [...]

Singlespeeds and helmets
March 25, 2009 | 3 Comments
On my way across the river to Brookline today, I took a very unofficial survey of the bikes zipping down Comm Ave, and I was surprised – though I shouldn’t be – to note that a majority were singlespeeds. I can’t say if they were fixed or not, but many had two sets of brakes. [...]

First ride without gloves
March 7, 2009 | Leave a Comment
That was today, ladies and gentlemen, it was today.
Admittedly I forgot my gloves (it’s always something), so I was lucky that it was warm enough to ride without gloves.
I’ve been lax here, again. I will catch up.

Silly Harrods

Nice bike, but that’s not usually what Mister “Three Golds” usually rides.
Caption reads: “British Olympic gold medal winning cyclist Chris Hoy (foreground) attends the launch of a new limited edition ‘Triple Gold’ BMX bicycle at Harrods department store in west London, on December 10, 2008. Hoy won three golds at this summer’s Beijing Olympic Games.”

There is no …. fork
November 28, 2008 | Leave a Comment
Hm, I’m not doing very well at catching up on my blogging.
So, I’ll make it even worse by simply posting a photo today. This is a shot of my new Igleheart “New England segmented” cyclocross fork which I recently added to my kind-of singlespeed ‘cross bike. I say”kind of” because it’s basically “kind of” an [...]

New golf, yes
November 21, 2008 | 1 Comment
An article about the importance of getting a proper bike fit is currently ranked at number six in the “most emailed” category of popular articles in the New York Times.
Proof that cycling is indeed the “new golf.”
